Central Win Chatham Tourney
Central went into Saturday's games knowing that two wins will earn them the tournament title. The first game did not go as planned as Chatham defeated the Maroons 3-0. Collinsville won their second game 3-1 so that meant that three teams had the chance of winning the title going into the last game.
Central's last game was against Freeport, a team that were 12-1-2 on the season. Both teams looked very tired in the first half but Central's back line consisting of Atti Kurthy, Marc Martindale, Evan Lotz and Victor Rodriguez stayed very tight and did not give up many chances. Corey Matejowsky and Ian Wells came off the bench and punched their claim for a start with impressive displays. Micah Walker and Julio Zarco worked hard in the midfield to create chances for Clint Miller. Joe Daniels was brought out of the goal to cause problems in the freeport back line and thats just what he did. Daniels chased down a long ball and sent over a fantastic cross to the back post for Miller's diving header that was blocked by the freeport goal keeper. Jeeyan Rostam Abadi sent in the corner that was met by Atti Kurthy. Kurthy's header found Micah Walker who managed to change the direction of the ball and send it past the Freeport goal keeper. Central manage to hold on for the 1-0 win and a chance of winning the tournament.
Central needed a Collinsville win to take the tourney and thats exactly what happened. Collinsville thrashed Chatham 5-1 which meant that Central were the new Chatham Invitational Champions. Central's record now improves to 7-1-2. Central will play their 7th game in 8 days on Monday night away to Normal U-High.
