Maroons Hang Tough, Lose Late.
The Champaign Central Maroons Freshman football lost a very tough football game Thursday night against the Generals of Decatur MacArthur. The Generals led the contest 6-0 with 12 seconds left in the first half when they ran a successful screen pass for a touchdown to take a 12-0 first half lead. The Maroons, down but not out, came back for a spirited second half. The Maroons' Tim Turner scored another touchdown on the season, his 8th of the year, and "Indy" Whalen added the extra point to make it 12-7. The Generals then scored another touchdown to take an 18-7 lead. In the 4th quarter Michael Carter scored his first touchdown of the year, the Maroons failed on the 2-point conversion making the score 18-13. The Maroons defense, who was tested all day, got the ball back for the offense giving the Maroons a chance to take the lead. The Maroons offense drove deep into The General's territory but stalled. The Generals scored a late touchdown to make the score 24-13. The Maroons are 2-3 on the season.
In an attempt to gain playing time and experience for players, the Generals and Maroons played an exhibition 5th quarter. In the 5th quarter Blake Alexander through a 60 touchdown pass to Tony Montgomery and Actavius Crockette recovered a Generals fumble for a touchdown.
