CARBONDALE -- Lakes senior Abbie Horan and Stevenson freshman Stephanie Miller both fired 3-over-par 75s on the opening day of the IHSA State Girls Golf Meet at Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Carbondale.
Horan and Miller find themselves just three strokes behind leader Kris Yoo , a senior from Conant who captured the individual state title last season, heading into today's final round of the 36-hole event.
Horan, who birdied two of her first three holes on Friday, could have found herself closer to Yoo, but a double-bogey 6 on the par 4 18th hole proved costly.
Horan finished in fourth place in last year's state meet.
Miller, who played the back nine first, started her day with a double-bogey on No. 10, to finish with a 39 in her first nine. She rallied to card an even-par 36 on the front nine.
Five players -- including New Trier's Kristin Wright -- are tied for second place one shot behind Yoo.
Lakes High senior Abbie Horan is three strokes off the lead after the opening round of the IHSA Girls State Golf Meet in Carbondale. Horan finished her first 18 holes with a 3-over-par 75.
