Regardless of what happens on the court Friday night at Lakes High, the match between host Lakes and rival Antioch will be a huge success.
That's because it's the third annual Volley for the Cure event, and according to Eagles coach Carla Thompson, "we have already raised more than $6,000 and still have more coming in."
All money raised will be donated to the Susan B. Koman Foundation to help with the fight against breast cancer.
The only part of the first two Volley for the Cure contests that hasn't been successful for Lakes has been the results. The Eagles have been 0-2 against their intradistrict rival.
That could change however, as Friday's 6 p.m. game (5 p.m. for the sophomore contest) promises to be very competitive.
Lakes is coming off a huge 25-16, 24-26, 25-23 victory over Grant on Wednesday that improved the Eagles' record to 13-16-3.
"This was a good win for us," said Thompson. "We played to the end. This is something with have struggled with in close games."
The coach praised the play of Ashley Sodt (3 service aces and 6 digs), thumper Mandy Fisher (11 kills) and fiery senior Shanna Hertz (5 kills, 9 digs, 1 block).
"Shanna continues to get better each match," the coach said. "Her defense was great tonight."
The coach would like nothing more than to set a record for money raised for the Koman Foundation. But she'd also like to see her team knock off powerful Antioch. "Hopefully, this win will take us where we need to be to take on Antioch," she said.
Many pink "Volley for the Cure" T-shirts were sold at Lakes and Antioch high schools, and anyone wearing one of the T-shirts to the volleyball match can walk over to the football field afterward and watch Antioch and Lakes battle it out on the gridiron in a huge contest with playoff implications.
