Perfect: LT too selflish to share Silver Boys Soccer title this year

Sharing wasn't going to be enough this season.

LT beat York 3-1 on Oct. 13 to win the Silver title outright with a 6-0 record.

"It means a lot to the team," LT senior defender Billy McGuinness said. "Last year we had to share. One of our goals this year was to win the conference outright and we got the job done. We were confident that we could do it and everyone really feels like we deserved to win the championship. It's great to go 6-0 in a conference like this. We had a lot of tough games. The Silver is a very strong conference, so to get the crown is a big deal."

Luke Skertich, Chris Meingast and McGuinness each had a goal against the Dukes, while Horacio Sanchez contributed two assists and Eliott Borge had one assist.

LT (19-3) captured its first outright crown since 2005 after sharing the title with York last season and with Hinsdale Central and Oak Park in 2006.

"Our guys had the conference championship as one of their goals for the year," LT coach Paul Labbato said. "We are very proud of them to be able to take home that honor. We went undefeated in conference, which is very difficult to do."

LT, which is one of the top-ranked teams in the state, closed the regular season by beating Benet 3-1 Saturday. Peter Gabrek and Meingast each had a goal and an assist, while Zach Pearsall also had a goal. Goalkeeper Sully Fox had fives saves.

LT also beat Lockport 1-0 on Oct. 14. Kyle Kurfirst scored off an assist from Dan Wielgos for the lone goal of the game. Fox had four saves to earn the shutout.

The Lions are seeded No. 2 in the Hinsdale Central Sectional and began the postseason Tuesday against the winner of the Gage Park and Lincoln Park game. Morton, which lost to LT earlier in the season, is the top seed in the sectional.

McGuinness is confident about his team's chances in the sectional.

"Last year we had a big problem scoring goals and we've done a better job of that this year," McGuinness said. "We're playing tough defense and we're all playing together as a team much better than recent years. We're just jelling and hitting our stride."
