LT Drops a Close one to Leyden
by Ken Ryan, Doings Newspaper -
Leyden clinched a playoff berth by beating Lyons Township 14-10 Friday in a West Suburban Conference crossover game in Northlake.
Tight end Dan Kiebler caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback David Rose with 1 minute, 46 seconds remaining for the go-ahead score.
Leyden (6-2), which last made the playoffs in 2007 when it finished 5-5, now has its most wins in a season since finishing 9-2 in 1998.
LT (5-3), which was trying to secure a playoff spot, jumped ahead 7-0 when J.D. Heinz caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Mitchell, but the Eagles answered on their next possession with a 10-yard TD run by Angel Maldonado to make the score 7-7.
LT's Brian Kelley put the Lions up 10-7 with a 23-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the first half and that's what the score remained until Leyden's late touchdown.
Maldonado, who had three straight 200-plus yard games in a row, rushed for 163 yards on 19 carries. Rose completed 13-of-23 passes for 166 yards, with Adam Bielech catching five passes for 70 yards.
LT was led by Mitchell, who completed 12-of-18 passes for 150 yards and also rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries. Heinz caught three passes for 98 yards.
