Senior libero Jamie Lundstrom and her Lyons Township teammates weren't happy with how their regular season ended.
The Lions looked to the past -- a scrapbook of LT's 1989 Class AA state championship run -- to help them move forward in their Class 4A Oak Lawn Regional.
"We saw that they were the underdogs. All season they had kind of a bad record (33-10) and actually came back and did really well and won State," Lundstrom said. "We hadn't been playing well at all and losing to teams we shouldn't have. We were upset about it and got over it and played really well finally."
On Saturday, the Lions (33-4) looked more like the team that had a 28-match regular-season winning streak as they swept Oak Lawn 25-15, 25-11 to capture the regional title.
Leading the victory were Jocelynn Birks (7 kills, 2 blocks), Alexis Viliunas (11 assists, 4 kills), Laura Williams (3 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces), Lundstrom (14 digs, 5 perfect passes), Tiffany Vazquez and Katie Bazzoni (3 blocks each) and Erin Juley (5 assists).
LT, the No. 1 seed in the St. Ignatius Sectional, played No. 5 Fenwick in Tuesday's sectional semifinal. The sectional final is at 7 p.m. between No. 2 St. Ignatius or No. 3 Queen of Peace. The Mother McAuley Supersectional with a downstate semifinal berth on the line, is at 7 p.m. Saturday.
"Even though (No. 8) Oak Lawn is very scrappy and dug some balls, the fact is we looked sharper, very together so I think we made some positive changes and we're ready to go," LT coach Joann Pyritz said. "I think they knew very well we weren't playing our best. We had won 31 matches and it's human nature to think, 'OK, I've done enough,' but in fact it was time to step it up even more and do something different."
The Lions rallied for an emotional three-set victory over Hinsdale Central Oct. 20 to win their first West Suburban Conference title since 2004, but they lost two of their last three regular-season matches to McAuley and Lockport, both in three sets.
Saturday's rejuvenated effort included a more diversified offensive attack that could make a difference in upcoming matches.
"We ran plays that we usually don't run, different set calls for the hitters, and I think that just made us play better," Viliunas said. "We looked at the championship book from 1989 and everyone just got inspired to be that good. It made us want to win more."
In the regional semifinals Oct. 29, LT beat No. 16 Proviso East 25-3, 25-4. Julia Karas, Williams and Lundstrom each had four aces, Juley and Viliunas each had five assists and Williams had four digs.
